Sirena recognises overfishing is a legitimate global concern. For more than 55 years, the Sirena brand has maintained a loyal consumer following through its passion for delivering a quality product, while ensuring a continued commitment to sustainable fishing practices.
Sirena operates under a comprehensive sustainability policy, which includes adhering to the International Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) code of conduct. The company is also a proud member of OURSOURCE – a not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote sustainable developments for the fishing industry.
As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices, the following changes will be implemented over the next 12 months:
- Reduce production of Yellowfin tuna, in favour of increased Tonggol tuna – a sustainably preferred species of tuna
- Further employment of the pole and line fishing method
- Introduction of FAD-free tuna through a new range of tuna and rice meals
- Detailed information on packaging including the type of tuna used and catchment code details
Sirena: The International Sustainability Foundation
Sirena adheres to the International Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) code of conduct, a collaboration of the tuna industry and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Our goal is to prevent healthy tuna stocks from becoming overfished and allow overfished stocks an opportunity to rebuild.
Sirena is committed to taking action in relation to:
- - Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing - by refraining from transactions in tuna caught by vessels on the IUU list;
- - Traceability - by maintaining strict records which include the name of catcher and transshipping vessel, fish species, ocean, fishing trip dates, fishing gear employed, date the company took ownership of the fish and each species by weight;
- - Research data- to ensure that research findings conducted by the ISSF is as accurate and complete as possible;
- - Bycatch - supporting the ISSF in its efforts to facilitate global research to mitigate the impact of capturing non-target marine life.
